Club Update: July 2025
Here is all the latest news and announcements for the past month, straight from the mat….
Scottish National Sambo Championships
Early in the month, club students Daniel and Tamsin made the journey to Dumfries to compete at the Scottish Nationals in Sport and Combat Sambo, supported by club coach, Ewan Lister. Within their respective weight categories, both young athletes, and Ewan (who was invited to compete on arrival), brought home a combined three gold and three silver medals.
Yorkshire Combat Sambo Light Open
On Saturday 19th July Doncaster Sambo & Wrestling proudly hosted the Yorkshire Combat Sambo Light 2025.
With 55 athlete entries, the event was a great success, with three of the club’s students taking podium places; and one of the club’s youngest, William, taking silver in his first combat sambo competition, and also awarded match of the day for the juniors section.
A huge thank you to all the volunteer staff, officials, spectators, and of course the competitors, who without them, the event would simply not go ahead!
Jiu Jitsu Comp Medallists
On the same day as the Yorkshire Combat Sambo Light competition, two adult students went to compete at a Jiu Jitsu event in Sheffield. Competing in several gi and no-gi bjj matches, both athletes performed extremely confidently and secured podium positions; with a special shout out to Gemma, who took gold in both categories, and in her first ever jiu jitsu competition!
BSF President
Club staff attended the British Sambo Federation AGM in Kent, where it was announced that the BSF President John Clarke, would be stepping down from the role, and although we are sad to see him go, we would like to thank him for all his great work, and wish him all the best. We now look forward to seeing how the BSF will continue to grow under the new President Robin Hyslop, to whom we send huge congratulations & believe the BSF will continue to be in very capable hands going forward.
Coach Ewan Lister receives Sambo L3 Coaching Award
Ewan received his Level 3 Coaching Award for Sambo, alongside Lewis Clarke (the Southern Area Combat Sambo Coach).
A huge congratulations goes out to both individuals, and the club is extremely proud to have both the National Combat Sambo Coach, Brian Lister, and Assistant National Combat Sambo Coach, Ewan Lister, call Doncaster Sambo & Wrestling their home.
Don’t forget!!!
As an introductory offer to the club, all new students (adult or junior) will receive a free 7 day pass which can be redeemed, to attend as many of the sessions as they would like, before deciding whether to join as a member!
We would like to think that our membership pricing is affordable, and great value for money - we don’t want to think anyone is missing out simply because they can’t afford a class and/or membership….
