4 LOCAL ATHLETES - 4 BRITISH GOLD CATEGORY WINNERS πŸ…πŸ…πŸ…πŸ…

The annual Combat Sambo Championships were held on the 22nd of August, at Hallcross Academy Lower, in Cantley, Doncaster, South Yorkshire. The event was hosted by independent, family owned mixed martial arts club - Doncaster Sambo & Wrestling; home to the National and National Assistant Coaches of Combat Sambo, for the British Sambo Federation (BSF).

Athletes and clubs from around the UK, travelled to Doncaster, from areas such as, London, Wales, and the North East, to compete in the national Championships, for podium places, and an opportunity to be invited to represent Team GB, in upcoming international Sambo tournaments. Doncaster Sambo & Wrestling junior students’ Daniel (17), Tamsin (15), adult member Tai, and club Head Coach Ewan, all faced opponents on the mat, across their respective weight categories, in front of a crowd of supporters and other athletes, to cumulatively achieve gold!

β€˜Myself and the club are immensely proud of this level of achievement for each of the students who took part in this event! Combat Sambo is not for the faint-hearted, and requires a lot of humility, perseverance, and dedication. It was exciting to watch them in action and considering how young they still are, they already have a foothold in competing in the sport at a national level!

Sambo is gradually building momentum in the UK, however it’s yet to really receive the media attention it deserves here. The sport incorporates skills and techniques from other mixed martial art disciplines, including some of the more well known including Wrestling, Jiujitsu, Judo…The foundation of Sambo is to teach an individual how to protect themselves effectively without the use of a weapon, in real-life scenarios, with results that speak for themselves once individuals take up the sport.

At present we are the only mixed martial arts club to teach Sambo (Sport and Combat) in Doncaster and the wider region. We can’t emphasise enough how useful Sambo is - especially in situations and professions, where self defence needs to be safe and effective!

We would love to speak with local schools and businesses / sectors, to explore how we could introduce Sambo and what we offer, via 1-1 and group solutions.’

- Ewan Lister, Club Coach, National Assistant Coach of Combat Sambo for the British Sambo Federation (BSF), British Sambo Federation (BSF) Master of Sport.
