So, it happened. Doncaster Sambo along with the backing of the British Sombo Federation and other contributors, talked about, organized and ran our very first 'Any Jacket You Like' Sambo Tournament.
Are we glad we did? all the sleepless nights, all the nagging, chasing and stressing? Damn right we are glad!
First call of the day was introductions and rules meeting presented by Brian Lister (BSF Combat Sambo Team Coach) and Colin Carrott (BSF Vice President). Followed by a minutes silence for former BSF President Martin Clarke, which was held and respected by everyone who were present.
We only had 3 no shows from the 46 entries and a few last minute entries on the day, which is a super successful turnout for the day, with some competitors doing more than one weight division and some doing both the Combat and Sports Sambo, which gave us over 50 great fights to enjoy throughout the day.
The tournament started off with the Juniors Sport Sambo fights. Considering most of the Juniors in the tournament having only been training in the Sambo for up to 6 months, they put on a great little show of their own.
Next up were the Cadets, which was the smallest of the groups so we had some unique matches ups.
Then the Women's Masters Sport Sambo.
Followed by the Men's Adults Sports Sambo. Where there was some spectacular throws and skills on show, which got the spectators cheering.
And last but not least by any means was the Men's Adults Combat Sambo. What can I say, what a show they put on, going full bore trying to take each others head off with an array of punches, kicks and knees seen, and some surprise performances from competitors not been seen in a Sambo Competition before.
Thankfully no serious injuries were sustained by anyone during the day, which is always a bonus, and our paramedic was able to ensure everyone was cared for all day.
We had an array of competitors taking part, with all kinds of different sporting backgrounds, some from MMA, some from JUDO, some from BJJ and more, which goes to show just how versatile Sambo can be, and is why we set up this tournament in the first place, to showcase this amazing combat system. We had lots of feedback from people who attended the event saying how smooth it all ran, and that they loved it and can't wait for the next one, so hopefully we have achieved what we set out to do.
The venue is truly one that most of us who run our own clubs are envious of, boasting two warehouse size areas, one half dedicated to an MMA Cage, TWO boxing rings and a full size mat area, the other half is all weights and fitness machines and spaces, with even more facilities available in another part of the building, including shower blocks, changing rooms etc. Thank you Brain & Brawn Fitness Morley, we hope to be back again with the next show.
We had a small army of volunteers, who without them, the event wouldn't have happened at all, and we are eternally grateful for their help:
